attempt #2

I have always liked doing crafty things even if they don't turn out that great. I used to scrapbook but now with two kids, coaching, teaching, and wifing (wife + ing: I don't think it's a word but if you know me, I tend to make a noun a verb and it makes sense to me!) I just haven't found the time to get back into it. So now I decided instead of scrapbooking I am going to learn how to sew and hoping that my little projects won't take as long as a scrapbook. When I was little I would sew with my grandma, and I loved it so I am hoping that I can love it now too! I bought my sewing machine for $90 from costco.com, it's simple but I really like how easy was to figure out.

My first attempt I made a dress that was too short and wide and looked like a poncho. So this pillow case dress is my second attempt at making a dress...
It's a little wide and a bit too long ( I might hem it or just let it be a long dress that Tatum can wear for a VERY LONG time). I found some other simple dress styles that I am going to attempt and I might just stick with burp cloths and bibs they seem to be a little easier to make.

moments that I love

It was really quiet in the house and my first thought was, "uh-oh, what have they done now" but this is what I found: Ty and Tatum reading a book on the couch. It was so cute. We have two copies of the Merry Christmas Curious George and they both were reading them. I love the fact that they are 18 months apart. They play together and they carry on these great toddler conversations and they enjoy doing the same activities.

By the way, if any of you wondering why Ty is wearing his coat inside here is why. Well, we went for a walk around 4 this afternoon and when we got back inside he refused to take of his coat because he said it was helping him being cozy and warm (he tends to be a little stubborn like somebody I know...). So, I finally was able to pry it off him at 8:30 right before bed. He definitely was cozy and warm, he was sweating!

monkeying around with Grandma

My kids are so lucky to have such wonderful grandparents. On Tuesdays my mother-in-law watches the kids. She is a former teacher, principal and is now the the special director for Anacortes S.D. So she knows the kids need structure, she is very organized and always has a theme for the kids each day she watches them. She bought a kids cookbook and Ty got to pick out what he wanted to make, so of course he picked out the one that was the most complicated: Rice Crispy monkey cookies on a stick

Ty reading the directions to grandma.

I really wished there was a picture of the mess they made when they made the cookies. Apparently there were rice krispies everywhere and a very sticky marshmallow mess. Pat probably would have had a coronary if he saw the mess.

Walaa!

no longer zoo deprived

Every morning Ty wakes up and asks us, "Who's coming up this morning?" When it's Tues, Wed, or Thur I tell him which babysitter is coming up and he is so excited. On the days that I have off, he gets disappointed that no one is "coming up" because that usually means he gets spoiled rotten by one of his grandparents or Cari (our other babysitter). Anyways, on Saturday morning, Ty asked us, "Who is coming up?" and we told him no one and that we were going to the zoo. He said, "Wahoo, the zoo. But what's the zoo?" The last time we took Ty to the zoo he looked like this:
And Tatum looked like this:
Ok, we meant to take him to the zoo all summer and fall but driving to Seattle and our kids missing their naps didn't sound like a lot of fun. Because if you know Ty and his misses his nap, well...it's just not that fun. Now that Ty only takes naps a few times a week and Taters does pretty good on little/no nap we headed down to the zoo. Ty LOVED the zoo. It's so nice to go a place where the kids don't have to stand in line and wait their turn. There was hardly anybody at the zoo so we had some prime animal viewing. We ended up buying a year membership and our goal is to try and go there once a month.

Most of the pictures I got of the kids were of them running away from us or of them looking at animals. So there is a lot of the back of their heads, sorry!

A very happy Ty!

horsey ride

Horsey ride mom, horsey ride mom! That's what we hear a lot of from Tatum. So this is our version of a horsey ride where either Pat or I run around the house with Tatum on our backs galloping and making horsey noises. Then when Pat and I are tired of doing it, she says, one more please. We can't resist and we do it over and over again!

20 months old

I can't believe Tatum is 20 months old and getting closer to her 2nd birthday. She is my baby girl and she is acting so grown up lately, she truly amazes me. I am not posting what she can do at 20 months to brag, I just want to be able to look back and know at what age she did things because eventually I am going to turn this blog into a book!

At 20 months Tatum...
  • Weighs around 26-27 lbs
  • says all of her letter sounds except for C and G. (for example: what does a b say?)
  • can identify a lot of letters, her favorite letters are W and T
  • can count to 10 (she always skips the number 9)
  • says 2-3 words sentences. Some of her favorites are: stop it Ty Swapp, here ya go, poop on potty, come on _______, hold you, Ty sleeping/awake/crying
  • If I ask her if she is cute, she says, no mommy cute!
  • she has very good manners and always says thank you
  • favorite show is Caillou from PBS Sprout
  • sleeps 12-13 hours a night and goes to bed between 6:30-7pm.
  • she cries/whines when I am home and when I am gone she is perfect for whoever is watching her including her daddy
  • eats, eats and eats
  • poops, poops and poops!
  • loves taking baths
  • does not like me doing her hair
  • loves shoes
  • can give a little attitude and can be sassy
  • LOVES her brother, she does not like it when Ty is not with her ( I hope she always feels that way about her brother)

Tatum making her scrunched up funny face, not the cutest but I still love it!

Buddies

On Thursday we had the Neyens Family over for dinner and then we went to the Nooksack vs Anacortes boys basketball game. Ty was so excited that his best buddy Xavier was coming over. I think that he asked at least 50 times, is Xavier here yet? Ty and X play so well together, it is really cute. Then there is Xavier's little baby sister, Harper. Tatum had to get used to sharing toys with a baby, all of a sudden she realized she wasn't the baby anymore.
Harper showing off her sitting skills.
Tatum crawling like Harper.

Tatum not letting Harper get her water. Even though these two are a year apart, hoefully they will be great friends too!

The boys playing so nicely together with Ty's garbage truck.

This is Xavier falling on Ty in April of 2007. I just had to post pictures of them together when they were little, they have been buds since they were born!

I finally got them to sit still so I can take a picture of them.

just a good day

Sorry the pictures are in reverse order. We had a great day today as a family. It started by Ty and I going to the pool. We had a great time and Ty's fear of water is slowly going away. But my fear of people seeing my white legs in the winter is still here...I am not sure that fear will ever go away. After naps we played outside, cleaned the car and went for a walk. It was great that it was so nice outside today! Then my parents came up for dinner and brought my 7 year old nephew Kaeden with them.

Ty cuddling with Kaeden. Ty LOVES playing with his older cousin. Anything Kaeden does, Ty wants to do too.

Tatum wrestling with her "apa."

Now it's Ty's turn for the wrestling.

My mom was carrying Tatum around like a sack of potatoes and Tatum couldn't get enough of it, she kept saying, "again."

coats on, boots on

Don't you walk around your house in just a diaper, coat and boots?
After Tatum's bath the other day, she wanted to wear her boots and her coat, carry her blankie and her goofy baby. After awhile I put her jammies on, but she had to put her coat over her jammies. She is just so funny and particular about her clothes!

building forts and such

I haven't taken many pictures lately. I could have. But I doubt any of you wanted to see what we have been up to the last few days of 2009...the stomach flu. Now we are feeling much better and school starts back up for me tomorrow. I am sad the break is over but I shouldn't feel sorry for myself, I had 18 days off and great quality time with my family.
This is Ty and Pat under the fort they built. Ty loved it! Please excuse the picture of our bed, our comforter was puked on a bit by our lovely 3 year old who refused to puke in the toilet or a bowl.

They pulled out bench away from the bed to build a fort.

T & T have been sporting their Husky hats lately and running around saying, "we are huskies, wahoo!"

I love watching Tatum read independently. She takes it so seriously.
